Turnovers kill patriots chances

Patriots offense hits Steel defense, lose 33-10 by Fred Kirsch NFL.com

The Pittsburgh Steelers defense derailed the Patriots offensive locomotive of late to the tune of 33-10.

Rain, cold and a tough Pittsburgh Steelers defense were too much for Matt Cassel and the New England Patriots on this day. Cassel had two interceptions, two lost fumbles and was below 50 percent passing. He wasn’t helped by his teammates with Randy Moss dropping a sure touchdown and another pass around 40 yards downfield. Moss wasn’t alone among the Patriots whose poor execution, particularly in the second half, has New England now on the outside looking in for a playoff berth chance.

Cassel had his roughest day as a Patriot, throwing 19 of 39 for only 169 yards. He was sacked five times and as a team, the Patriots converted only one third down out of 13 tries. They also turned the ball over five times to Pittsburgh’s one.

Kevin Faulk did everything he could to help his team with 6 runs for 73 yards and 7 catches for 48 yards.

The game started off on a positive note for New England as Mike Vrabel set up the first Patriots score early in the first quarter.
On his first series in the game, Ben Roethlisberger was second and 12 from his 22. He looked to pass to his right but didn’t get enough height on the throw to get over Vrabel’s outstretched arms. Vrabel held on and returned it to the Steelers 14. New England took over on offense and Cassel hit a streaking Wes Welker over the middle on second down for 12 yards to the 2. Sammy Morris put the finishing touches on the drive from there and New England had a 7-0 lead.

Pittsburgh got three points back later in the first quarter on a 20-yard Jeff Reed field goal. Roethlisberger converted a third and 7 early in the drive with a 15-yard completion to Nate Washington and later went back to Washington for 16 yards on third and 12 from the Patriots 27. On second and 6 from the 7, Roethlisberger scrambled but came up a yard short of the first down marker. On third down, fullback Gary Russell carried but was stuffed for no gain up the middle and the Steelers sideline elected to play it safe with the field goal.

A 29-yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal gave the Patriots their touchdown lead back with just under seven minutes left in the first half. On the drive, the Patriots were in good shape after converting a fourth and inches from the Steelers 21 with a Morris run. But on third and 2 from the 11, Troy Polamalu hit Cassel just as he was throwing to Moss to force the field goal unit onto the field.

At the two-minute warning Pittsburgh was threatening to score, second and 6 from New England’s 19. The Steelers got there mixing pass and run to Mewelde Moore along with Hines Ward converting a third and 2 with a 4-yard catch at the Patriots 23. When play resumed, Roethlisberger found a wide open Santonio Holmes in the right top corner of the end zone to tie the game with the extra point.

With Ellis Hobbs’ return to the 27, New England had 1:50 to work with and two time outs.

After Welker caught a 6-yard pass, Faulk had a dandy of a run off left guard in which he deked out a couple Steelers and took 41 yards to the Pittsburgh 26. Two plays later Morris ran the same play to the right side for 14 yards to the 9. From there Cassel had three tries and plenty of time. He came up empty but his second pass attempt should have been an easy touchdown for Moss that was dropped. His third pass should have been an easy interception for Polamalu but he too, flubbed it. To make matters worse for New England, Gostkowski was wide right on his 27-yard attempt and the first half ended knotted at 10.

The Patriots had the ball first in the second half but a Casey Hampton sack stopped New England’s momentum and the Patriots punted at the Steelers 37.

The Steelers took over at their 14 and started pushing around the Patriots defense. Moore was good for a 20-yard run on the first play of the drive along with two other runs of 7 and 13 yards. Pittsburgh eventually got down to the Patriots 9, first and goal but couldn’t get further than the 7 with Roethlisberger throwing incomplete on second and third down due to good red zone coverage by New England. Reed was good on a 25-yard field goal to give the Steelers a 13-10 lead.

Disaster struck for the Patriots on the ensuing kickoff. Matthew Slater tried to field the kick, bobbled it and then kicked it toward the sideline. Keyaron Fox recovered before the ball went out of bounds and Pittsburgh was back in business, first and goal at the Patriots 8.

Two plays later, Roethlisberger hit Ward from 11 yards out and it was Pittsburgh up by 10, 20-10.

It got worse for the Patriots.
On the next play from scrimmage, James Harrison got around Matt Light and stripped Cassel. LaMarr Woodley recovered for Pittsburgh on the Patriots 25.

Back on the field, Roethlisberger immediately hit Miller over the middle for 19 yards to the 6. Once again, however, the Patriots defense did its job in the red zone, holding Pittsburgh to a 20-yard field goal to make the score 23-13 with 2:50 remaining in the third quarter.

Harrison did it again on the Patriots next series. The Patriots drive had just been extended due to a vicious and unnecessary hit on Welker by Ryan Clark. The penalty gave New England a first down but two plays later Harrison found his way to Cassel again and this time James Farrior recovered for Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh would have liked to settle for three points yet again but this time Reed’s kick from 40 yards went wide left. It was a big break for New England; on the previous play Washington dropped a sure touchdown on third and 8.

With 11:29 left to play, the Patriots needed two touchdowns.

Any hope of a comeback was pretty much dashed when Cassel overthrew Benjamin Watson down the middle on third and 13 from the Steelers 43 during the next series. Polamalu was playing deep safety and came up with the interception, returning it to the Steelers 34.

It was a slow death for the Patriots as the Steelers came up with only three points after the turnover, a 45-yard field goal to make the score 26-10. The 6-play drive left only 5:39 for New England.

Finally, the Pittsburgh defense put the Patriots out of their misery when Lawrence Timmons picked off Cassel’s first and 10 pass from the Steelers 14.Cassel was looking for Faulk, who was one of the few players in blue having a good game, but Timmons stepped in front and returned the ball all the way to the New England 1 where Watson caught up to him.

Two plays later, Russell ran it in to make the final score 33-10.

SOX BEAT ANGLES

RED SOX BEAT ANGELS
sitting in a bar in the middle of times square screaming when the Sox take out the Angels is fun. People don't realize at first why you are yelling because you are not local.

play of the game, THE CAPTAIN JASON VARITEK CHASING DOWN THE BASE RUNNER Willits TO END THE THREAT IN THE 9TH

--

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox brushed aside the 100-win Angels in four games, dismissing their best-in-baseball regular season as last month's news.

When it turns to October, no one dominates like Boston.

Jason Bay scored with a headfirst slide on Jed Lowrie's two-out single in the ninth inning and the defending World Series champions took advantage of a botched suicide squeeze, beating Los Angeles 3-2 Monday night to win their first-round playoff series in four games.

Boston, which also won it all in 2004, will have a chance at a third title in five years if it can get past the Rays in the best-of-seven AL championship series that starts Friday night at Tampa Bay.

"That's what this team is about, especially the last few years," said Lowrie, a rookie who was called up as a midseason replacement when shortstop Julio Lugo was injured. "It's October, they've won a lot of games, and to be a part of that is awesome."

The AL's youngest team, Tampa Bay had never finished better than last in the division and posted the worst record in baseball last year while Boston, one of the league's charter members, was winning its seventh championship. But in just 11 years, the Rays and Red Sox have become fierce rivals, with the latest bench-clearing brawl coming at Fenway Park in June.

"I can't wait to get it going," pitcher Josh Beckett said. "But we've got a few days off to enjoy this."

Los Angeles was able to force the series to a fourth game with an extra-inning victory Sunday night that snapped an 11-game playoff losing streak against Boston.

As it turned out, that gave the Angels less than an 24 extra hours.

"Those guys have certainly, in the last three series that we've been involved with them, they've beaten us," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "I thought we played much better this series than going back to '04 or '07 against them. It's naturally disappointing. But we're going to have to keep trying to get better. That's all we can do."

Jon Lester held the Angels to four hits in seven shutout innings but lost his chance at a second victory in the series when they scored twice in the eighth to tie it 2-all. Los Angeles had a chance to go ahead in the ninth before Erick Aybar, whose 12th-inning single was the winner in Game 3, missed on a squeeze attempt.

In the bottom half, Bay lofted a fly ball down the right-field line that Reggie Willits pursued and dove for before it one-hopped into the stands for a ground-rule double. First baseman Mark Teixeira made a diving catch of Mark Kotsay's line drive for the second out.

Again, it was only a temporary save.

Lowrie grounded a single into right, and Bay raced around third and slid headfirst ahead of the throw while his teammates poured out of the dugout to celebrate.

It's been a common sight in Boston, but one Bay had never taken part in before he was acquired from Pittsburgh when the Red Sox unloaded Manny Ramirez at the July 31 trade deadline.

"The only thing I'm thinking is, 'Get a good jump and don't fall down around third," Bay said. "I can't imagine that it'll get more intense than this, but it will."

Manny Delcarmen got two outs in the ninth for the win, squelching the Angels' chances to take the lead by getting Aybar to whiff on a bunt try with one out and a runner on third. Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek, whose passed ball helped Los Angeles tie the game in the eighth, pursued pinch-runner Willits back toward third and made the diving tag a step before the bag.

Varitek lost the ball as he hit the ground, but third base umpire Tim Welke ruled that he had already applied the tag. Scioscia argued, but replays showed that the out was recorded before the ball came loose.

Scot Shields took the loss, allowing two hits and a run while striking out three in 1 2-3 innings.

"We've got a lot of guys that are frustrated right now," Scioscia said. "Can't tell you how proud we are of the way our guys played through the whole summer, and it's unfortunate the way this series turned out."

Lester and John Lackey, who also faced each other in Boston's Game 1 victory, matched scoreless innings through four before Kotsay and Varitek singled and Dustin Pedroia doubled them both in. An AL MVP candidate who was hitless in his first 15 at-bats of the playoffs, Pedroia pulled up one step before second base to bang his hands together in celebration.

But the Angels tied it in the eighth when Teixeira drew a two-out walk from Hideki Okajima, then Justin Masterson walked Vladimir Guerrero. The runners moved up as Masterson and Varitek got crossed up on a passed ball, which proved costly when they scored on Torii Hunter's single to right.

Pedroia's confidence never wavered during the slump, as he showed when he popped out of the dugout for pregame batting practice and said, "You can't keep a good man down."

Or a good team.

The Red Sox may have missed a chance to sweep with Sunday's 5-4, 12-inning loss, but they saved themselves a trip back to Anaheim, Calif., for a winner-take-all Game 5.

Game notes
Lackey was rescued from a second loss in the series when the Angels tied it in the eighth. He allowed two runs and seven hits, giving up four runs in 13 2-3 innings during the series. He was outpitched by Lester both times. ... Hunter was 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position. The rest of the Angels had three hits combined. ... Pedroia was hitless in 19 postseason at-bats dating to the 2007 World Series.

Wisconsin Badgers don't care about...spreads!

Wisconsin Badgers
Let me start out by saying I love Saturdays during the fall. And not because of the sweet smell of pumpkin pies or cheese platters at wineries, nor the sights of couples holding hands as they throw back their scarfs in the brisk chilly weather. Nope, it's because I get to sit in my my house, barely clothed, while shaking off last nights poor decisions. With the tv showing all scores of the day for college football and as I lay there, eating 3 day old wings....ah, fall Saturdays.

Well, instead of enjoying the scores as they come up....I was 4 games up on a 5 game tease. The one left is the new look Michigan Wolverines versus the vaunted Wisconsin Badgers. All I needed at this point is for Badgers to win by a half a point....let me repeat myself...A HALF OF ONE SINGLE POINT!!!

As I checked the score at half time, I'm up by 19. So one would think, well lets continue running the ball and let that clock tick. So, in this case one doesn't get his legs broken by uninvited guests.

So, later on I turned back to secure my teased games and what do I see...the Badgers, who really isn't that intimidating of an animal, cannot even get first downs, or run the ball efficiently. Forget about throwing the ball, the mongoloid who lives next door who's been watching the smurfs all day, could throw better then any QB who's come out of the Badger nation.

Needless to say, I was headed for a great afternoon, possible blowing my winnings on craigslist hookers, Doritos and yo-yo's. But nope, the Wisconsin Badgers had to ruin it by being not good!!!

Here's to you Troy Brown

TROY BROWN
So Troy Brown has retired, I for one am happy that he ended his career as a Patriot. He has done so much in a Patriots uniform and i look forward to when he is inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame.

REMEMBER WHEN: He lateraled to Antwaan Harris, who ran it in for the score that put the Patriots up, 21-3.

REMEMBER WHEN: In the AFC Championship game against the Steelers in January 2002, Brown's 55-yard punt return put the Patriots on the board
scoop and score
REMEMBER WHEN: In 2000, Brown earned a role as a starting wideout for the first time in his career. He started 15 games, hauling in 83 passes for 944 yards and 4 TDs and was still a threat in the return game

REMEMBER WHEN: Brown was the Patriots' leading receiver in Super Bowl XXXVI, catching 6 passes for 89 yards in addition to setting up Adam Vinatieri's winning field goal with this reception of a Tom Brady pass in the fourth quarter.

REMEMBER WHEN: The 33-year-old Brown's role changed in the 2004 season. With Ty Law and Tyrone Poole out for the year, and Eugene Wilson (right) battling injuries, the New England secondary was in disarray. So, Brown became a valued defensive back.

TROY BROWN'S WORDS ON HIS LAST CHANCE
"I would give anything in the world to be able to put those pads on again and do it and I probably had the opportunity to do it, but it just wasn't the right color. I didn't think I could be in green and white."

Tatum Bell are you serious?

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions running back Rudi Johnson says his luggage was taken from the team's practice facility by Tatum Bell.

Johnson was waived by Cincinnati, met with Lions president Matt Millen on Monday and signed a free-agent contact. During the meeting, his two duffel bags were taken from the team's headquarters.

Johnson said Wednesday he was shown surveillance footage Tuesday afternoon that captured the theft.

A message seeking comment was left Wednesday with Bell's agent, Kennard McGuire. Johnson replaced Bell on Detroit's 53-man roster.

The empty bags were returned Tuesday evening, but Johnson said he is still missing $200, his ID, credit cards and clothes. Johnson said he had spoken with Bell and did not plan to involve the police.

Hoping for a big year out of Ben Watson

Ben Watson I for one am hoping for a big year out of Ben Watson. Last year he had 36 receptions for 389 yards. That is not enough and though he only played 12 games that is also an issue. We need more. His 6 touchdowns were not bad but a guy with his speed and strength should provide much more for the patriots.

One would have to think with the receiver corps being a little thinner this year with out Stallworth that we will need more from Watson. I don't understand why he isn't more wide open when the defense has to worry about Moss and Welker?

Do You? Anyone?

Usa vs China basketball

First off I disagree with Bing Bong, I am into the Olympics. i care about the medal count and i care that USA does well. I agree that some of the events are foolish, but Basketball is great.
Kobe, Team USA
I DVRed the game vs. China and Yao Ming and watched it Sunday night. I knew who won and I even knew the score but it didn't matter. Watching the NBA's best minus Garnett, Dunkin, and Pierce play an up tempo game of great blocks (Lebron) and great dunks was very exiting.

It is amazing how far basketball has come and how much the players have developed since the Dream Team days. China hung around for much of the game and really just is not deep enough to hang with USA. Tuesday the 12th at 8PM EST is the next game. Don't miss it, this is great basketball and what I think we all want basketball to be.

Not happy with the trade.

Manny and papi
So let me get this straight, we just gave up one of the premier right hand hitters of all time in Manny Ramirez, an ok 4th outfielder and a middle reliever whom i think will turn out to be serviceable and 7 million dollars for Jason Bay? Jason Bay seems like a pretty good ball player that will fit in and do all right, but don't you think we gave up too much?

Don't forget with Manny protecting him opposing teams only intentionally walked Papi on average 8 times a year. though a couple years ago when Manny missed 30 games at the end of the season Papi was INT. Walked 8 times in 30 games. So the Sox also traded away a piece of David Ortiz. It's hard to be mister clutch when the catcher stands up to catch 4 quick ones.

If he had to go and the reports are true that the veterans were asked and they said, "let him go" then I understand. My only problem with this is the fact that we gave away way to much for Jason Bay. We shouldn't be paying Manny to play for the Dodgers.

I'll Miss Manny

I guess everyone in Boston hates Manny now but not me. He'll always be one of my favorite players. He was the best hitter I've ever watched and the Red Sox would still be a cursed franchise with no World Series Championships since 1918 without him. So what if he attacked the traveling secretary and bitch-slapped Youk in the grill - maybe they deserved it. Everyone needs to stop acting like they're the owners of the team. Who cares how much the Red Sox paid Manny - it's not our money. The guy was a great player for the Red Sox. How many guys sign huge contracts and suck after that - not Manny. I liked Manny because he was an awesome player and entertaining to watch. I'm not even saying I'm against the trade. It's probably time for the Red Sox and Manny to part ways - but let's not forget what Manny did here in Boston. You can choose to remember the crap the media throws out there about Manny or you can remember what Manny did on the field. I'm an "on the field" guy. Above all else he had the best quote ever right after they won the World Series in 2004: "It was our destination". What's not to love? Loosen up and relax people.

A letter from Jeff about Manny

Good Day,

Let me just tell you what I think about Manny Ramirez. Here is a guy who has been over in the United States his whole life who can barely read and still cannot speak English. If this fu**ing guy couldn’t hit a baseball he would be knocking on your door at Whitney Carriage and saying I’m here to look at your water problem. This fu**ing guy makes 20 million dollars a year to hit a baseball. This guys has no respect for anybody but himself. He slaps Yukulis in the face in the dugout and no one cares (don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed watching that.) Throws an 65 year old man to the ground because he couldn’t get him 16 tickets to a sold out game 5 hours before first pitch. Has quit on his team many times throughout his 8 year career here. Refused to pinch hit when he had the day off. Has asked to be traded over 5 times. And after all this stupid shit, people still are having heart attacks with the fact that they might trade him. Hes a fucking disgrace and should be permanently expelled from baseball. And if they do trade him I hope when he comes back here, I hope that they throw tools at him. Its just Manny being Manny. No, its Manny being a fu**ing idiot. I hope he dies.

Thank you,
Jeff

Wachusett Country Club ISO golf

Saturday July 12th 2008. Remember that date. It's not only important to you and I, it's important to your friends, your children and yo mama. July 12th 2008 will be etched in the history books as The Day 2 ISS-TO-GO team members drove the ball for a combine 710 yards. If that's not a stretch to find something good in a round of golf I don't know what's is. The team took their show on the road to a what was once voted The Best Public Course in The World, The Wachusett Country Club. Some people like the bells and whistles in life. If you're one of these people The Wachusett C.C. is for you. Talk about bells and whistles...Free Tees, GPS in all carts, a sick food/beer shack conveniently placed on the back nine between 4 holes, free VJ's, ball washers at every hole, and a bartended that will give you 4 Bacardi and Diets TO-GO. The only down side of this course is that it's tough. But all and all it was a good day and fun was had by all...except for Kevin on the 6 hole when the fate of his lofting wedge ended in the bottom of the lake. Word has it that the club sucked anyway and was egging him on all morning.

The Most Over Rated Sporting Event of All Time....The Olympics!

The Most Over Rated Sporting Event of All Time....The Olympics!

Let's face it, the only countries that really care about the Olympics are the one's that are insecure about their sexuality (France!); Countries that try to make a political statements by juicing up their athletes only to loose to a hard working, blue collar American (see Rocky IV). So what, you raised a little Kenyan baby to run as fast as a cheetah. That means two things 1) Nothing 2) Now my blood diamonds can get to the United States faster.

I am starting to admire countries like North Korea, Chile, Antarctica and Canada for boycotting the Olympics this year over the notion that the Olympics have become "too gay".

Wait, I was just informed the Canada isn't boycotting the Olympics. I knew Canada was Bi Curious!

What happened to the old Olympics when people use to die. Now that was a real man's Olympics! Think about it, you want to make a statement about your country and it's people? Make the Olympics a fight to the death. Think Mortal Combat before the Friendships and Babality finishing moves. Each country should be tasked with finding the toughest S.O.B. in the land. Sending him via the shoulders of the incompetent to kick ass or die dishonorably. Now that would really be saying something. Can you imagine?

President Bush "And the United States selects...CHUCK NORRIS"

The rest of the world cries.
Now that's what I'm talking about!

Kevin Varieur Diary ( Stolen from Bill Simmons but significantly shorter)

So Bill Simmons, The Sports Guy, does this thing every now and again...he will sit down and watch a game and document everything. So hear I go...

The following happened between the hours of 7:oopm and 1:30am of June 18th, 2008

7:00 - My cpub 4 team just lost to the biggest bunch of losers to ever set foot on a men's softball field but no one really cares because in about 2 hours the Celtics are going to take the next step to becoming NBA Champions. The last time the Celts won the championship I had just lost my virginity...my sippy cup virginity that is. I was two years old and was sure about two things 1) Chocolate milk was the best invention ever 2) Larry Bird is a god.

7:35 - Still haven't showered but I did change my clothes so I will be sporting the Beat L.A. shirt for the next few hours. Heading to Joe's for a few pre game beers and a couple games of H.O.R.S.E. We all suck...

8:45 - Almost game time. KG looks pumped, Ray Allen looks intense, Paul Pierce looks like Beetle Juice, Ronda just peed his pants and Sam Cassel just enter the Bank North Garden in a aircraft that I just can't identify. Who cares? It's game time....wait...calling Papa Gino's... two large pizzas please...Okay! It's game time and the intros...son of a...I need a beer....okay. Game time and the Garden is insane. I jumping around my living room like an idiot.

9:00 - 11:30 I think I just blacked out. What happened. I think I just ruffeed myself.

11:49 - "Anything is possible...ANYTHING IS POSSIBLLLLLLEEEE!!!!!" Kevin Garnette is not normal

New Workout

So, we all ate to and drank to much watching the Celtics dominate the lakers so i thought it would be beneficial to start a new workout.

"I SUCK" ~ Sasha Vujacic

Ah, if pictures could say a 1000 words this one would only say 2, "I SUCK!". After watching the Celtics battle back from being down 24 last night, catching my breath and evaluating the situation I came up with the following conclusions:

1) That was AWESOME

2) The Celts are undeniably the best team in basketball

3) The Black Mamba is a sick nick name and if I knew any African Americans personally, I would call them all Black Mamba

4) Paul Pierce is God, Ray Allen is indeed Jesus Shuttlesworth and Kevin Garnette is Xerxes

5) Kobe should bend over the back of a chair, thrust his chest into it repeatedly until he stops choking (see self Heimlich maneuver , its actually pretty sweet)

6) The Zen Master is creepy as hell. I know he's recognized as one of the best coaches of all time but I just can't get past his recent creepiness. It's like bizarro Phil Jackson has taken the initiative to make every press conference as creepy as watching porn with your parents...so I've heard.

7) L.A. is the epicenter of smug...get some real fans!

8) My 50 inch plasma was definitely worth the money. Watching the NBA in regular def is too easy to get confused with the LA Riots of the early 90...

9) Sasha was definitely crying after Ray made him look like 4th grader trying out for the middle school basketball team...

10) That was awesome. Thank YOU Danny Ainge

KIMBO SLICE ONLY FIGHT BUMS

HeY eliteXC, first of who calls you elite? Your doctors and refs aren't elite, they are terrible.
Robbie Lawler

Last Nights prime time MMA Tilt had everything set up I had nothing to do and looked forward to it. There were 2 good fight the whole night. Lawler and Smith (though it shouldn't have been stopped until smith was given his full 5 minutes) was shaping up to be a great fight and i look forward to tuning in for the re-match.

Gina Carano
The Chick fight was interesting except for the fact that apparently the face of women's MMA(Gina Carano) doesn't care enough about MMA to make weight. Kaitlin Young, Gina's competition would fare better next time if she would figure how to keep getting punched in the face.

The Headliner
Kimbo Slice
Why are people so interested in Kimbo Slice? Yes he is tough, yes he very strong. Do not confuse that for very good though, he is Bob Sapp, very entertaining and different but not one of the best, not even close. The proof is in the competition. James Thompson is not a very good fighter and loses as often as he wins and I had him beating Kimbo until the decided to give the win to Kimbo.

EliteXC should be embarrassed. Thank God that wasn't pay per view.

Oh and one last thing Phil Baroni is a joke.

The 500 Club

It's Friday morning on the last day of the month. For a sales guy this is the last day to get the deal and I would do anything short of killing babies to get it done. With that said, I started thinking about steriods for sales. If there was a way for me to cheat and be one of the best salesmen of all time...would I do it? YES...yes I would. Even if it meant I would suffer the side effects down the road...who the hell cares about down the road.
